Tuesday, 2nd December 2025 at 8.0 pm– A Royal Christmas – A Talk by Siobhan Clarke –
We might think Christmas derives largely from the Victorians, but in fact many of our traditions date back to Tudor times and beyond. Pagan rites were gradually absorbed into a Christian festival and, over many centuries, people ate and drank, played games, danced, and exchanged gifts. The influence of the monarchy has been profound, from the German customs of the Victorian royal family to the King’s Speech.
This talk explores Christmas at court from the middle- ages to the present day and how the royals have shaped our own celebrations. Siobhan Clarke is a Guide Lecturer at Historic Royal Palaces and an Accredited Lecturer of the Arts Society.
