Our second Virtual Tour – May 2020

The following email has been sent to members today, Thursday 29th May.

We are glad that so many of you enjoyed receiving the link to the map created by the late Tony Osborne for our summer stroll along the Thames Riverside in 2008.  This month the link is to a map which Tony drew for the Society’s first summer stroll in 2007  round the East Molesey Old Village Conservation Area.  The road names on the map are as shown on the 1868 Ordnance Survey Map.

As restrictions on exercise have been eased, we hope that it may now be possible for more of you to do the actual walk.  However, if you are unable to go out, you will still be able to go on an imaginary walk.  There are details and photographs of many of the locations in Rowland Baker’s ‘Book of Molesey’ and in our own ‘Molesey Then and Now’ – also on the Molesey History website,

Please click here for the link to the map and Tony’s notes on the numbered sites on the map.

Virtual Tour email to members sent April 2020

A recent article in the New Scientist suggests that we can get the health benefits of nature, even though we may be isolated indoors: ‘you don’t actually have to go into nature to reap the benefits. Experiments have shown that photographs, videos and audio recordings –”surrogate nature” – have a similar though less powerful effect.’

Many of us are unable to go out and take long walks and we thought it might be possible to use our minds to take an imaginary walk through some of the historical locations in the Molesey area by revisiting some of our past Summer Strolls.

So, here is a link to a map created by the late Tony Osborne for our Summer Stroll in 2008 along the Thames riverside, together with information to help stimulate the imagination. You will find more details and photographs of many of the locations in Rowland Baker’s ‘Book of Molesey’, ‘Thameside’ and in our own ‘Molesey Then and Now’ – also on the Molesey History website,

We hope it will not be too long before we are able to go out and about and that we will all be able to meet up for our stroll in the summer.
