Aethelstan, The First King of the English – A Talk by Julian McCarthy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Mercia and Wessex came to Kingston for a ceremony, which was special because
something happened that had never occurred before but which, today, we take for granted.
This king was Athelstan who, in his comparatively short reign of 15 years, would become
known as \u2018King of the English\u2019, the first time that title was used here or on the continent.
Julian McCarthy will give an illustrated talk on King Athelstan ; who he was, how he
became king, why he chose Kingston as the place of his consecration, how he became the
