Indian Army Camps at Hampton Court – A talk by Ian Franklin

In 1902, 1911, 1919 and 1937 “colonial” troops from India and nearby countries came to
the UK to take part in the coronation processions of Edward VII, George V and George VI, and, in 1919, to commemorate World Peace Day. They were based in Home Park. Ian’s talk
will tell us about the camps and their impact on the British people and give us an insight into what the troops did while they were here.

Ian hopes that his talk, with many rare images, will transport you back to a time when a visit
to Hampton Court was one of the highlights of previous Coronation years.

If anyone has any memorabilia relating to the camps, in particular any photographs of the
1937 camp, Ian would be very pleased to hear from you. Please contact us and we will pass the message on to him.

REVISED TALK

Thursday, 7th September – 8pmArtists, Antiquaries and Collectors: Illustrations of Surrey by John and Edward Hassell collected by Robert Barclay of Bury Hill, Dorking, c.1820 A talk by Julian Pooley

The late eighteenth century witnessed a craze among antiquaries and gentlemen collectors for collecting engravings and portraits to bind into published works of local history.  Robert Barclay’s collection of over 2000 prints, watercolours and drawings, compiled to illustrate his copy of Manning and Bray’s History and Antiquities of Surrey (1804-1814) includes over 500 original watercolours of Surrey buildings by John and Edward Hassell, John Carter and Henry de Cort, which reflect the conflicting contemporary tastes for picturesque views and antiquarian precision and provide a wonderful glimpse of Surrey buildings and high streets two centuries ago. This illustrated talk will include examples of the Hassell’s work around the Molesey area
